Key Stage 3 (Years 7–9)
The Key Stage 3 national curriculum is designed to provide a comprehensive educational framework for students aged 11 to 14. Its primary aims are to foster a broad and balanced understanding of various subjects, including English, mathematics, science, humanities, languages, arts, and physical education.
The curriculum equips students with the essential knowledge and skills necessary for further academic study and practical application in everyday life. It encourages critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving abilities, promoting a holistic approach to learning that prepares students for the challenges of Key Stage 4 and beyond.
Additionally, the curriculum seeks to instil a love for learning and curiosity about the world, nurturing well-rounded individuals capable of engaging with society and contributing positively to their communities.
Supporting Every Learner
At Haydon Bridge High School, we recognise that strong literacy and numeracy skills are essential foundations for success across the curriculum and in later life. For students in Years 7 and 8 who require additional support in these areas, we provide increased curriculum time in English and mathematics, allowing them to build confidence, close gaps in learning, and develop the skills they need to fully access all subjects.
We also understand that some students benefit from a more gradual and nurturing transition to secondary school. Our modified curriculum and dedicated teaching spaces provide a supportive environment tailored to individual needs, helping students to settle, grow in confidence, and thrive both academically and personally.

Students who require more literacy and numeracy support will study additional English and Maths in place of one Humanities hour and one French hour.

Year 9 Character Curriculum
Our unique character curriculum in Year 9 is meticulously designed to empower students with a comprehensive education that extends far beyond traditional subject boundaries.
