The new Year 9 Character Curriculum
This curriculum will be introduced for the first time in the 2026–2027 academic year.
At Haydon Bridge High School, we believe that character is shaped through a carefully designed and ambitious curriculum that places a strong emphasis on values such as respect, responsibility and resilience. Our Year 9 character curriculum is intended to develop students’ ethical awareness, social understanding and personal behaviours that enable them to thrive both individually and within society.
Through the integration of character education across our curriculum, students learn to make informed and principled decisions, resolve conflicts with empathy and integrity, and build positive, lasting relationships. We recognise that character education is essential in preparing young people to become responsible citizens who contribute meaningfully to their communities. It also equips them with the confidence and moral courage to face challenges and make the right choices, even in difficult circumstances. Our character curriculum provides a strong foundation that supports both personal development and academic success.
Our Curriculum
At Haydon Bridge High School, we design our curriculum with the highest aspirations for all students. We nurture curiosity, encourage independence of thought and develop critical thinking skills that extend beyond the classroom. Each subject is carefully structured to inspire students to explore their interests and discover their individual passions, while offering rich academic and social challenge.
Our curriculum is also rooted in our distinctive local context. Set in the heart of the Tyne Valley, we draw inspiration from our surrounding landscape and community heritage, ensuring that students develop a strong sense of belonging and pride in where they live. This local connection enhances their learning and helps them to see their place within both their community and the wider world.
